Total number of postgraduate seats in 2020 (2077)


The available number of postgraduate seats in 2020 are 1035. This is only for MD and MS aspirants. Similarly, 72 seats are available for dental majors. Considering, the nursing arena, there will be 173 seats in total. We ought to describe other seats in detail in upcoming texts.

Since, the medical education commission is the sole body responsible for organizing the postgraduate entrance examinations, it has become easy to find the total number of available postgraduate seats

The MEC is organizing joint postgraduate examination this year. The official date for these examinations are October 13, 2020 for MD/MS entrance and MN entrance. Similarly, 14th October for MPH and M.Phil. Lastly, 15th October for MDS, M.Pharm and MSc.MIT and for other remaining subjects.

In this post, we shall highlight the total number of postgraduate seats for upcoming postgraduate trainees.

Total number of postgraduate seats in 2020 for Doctor of Medicine (MD) courses

For, MD Anesthesiology there are 93 seats. Aspiring dermatologists will get 28 seats. 106 students in merit will get their seats in MD internal medicine. 81 graduates will be receiving their degree in MD gynecology after three years.

Similarly, 49 doctors will be eligible to study ophthalmology. We can be assured, of getting 76 paediatricians after three years. And, 32 doctors can study psychiatry after passing the entrance examinations this year.

There will also be 44 seats for studying radiodiagnosis, the most charming subject. Lastly, 43 successful candidates will be able to choose ENT surgery as their majors. One candidate will be lucky to get to study radio-oncology at NAMS. 14 seats are available for forensic medicine. On the other hand, 27 seats are reserved for MD community medicine.

Similarly, 63 seats are available for aspiring general physicians (MDGP) this year.

Masters of Surgery

A total of 111 seats are available for aspiring general surgeons. 80 seats are available for those doctors wanting to become orthopedic surgeons.
Basic Sciences
The MEC will also use the same examination to ensure that aspirants get a chance to study basic sciences. 16 seats will be there for majors in biochemistry and 31 will be for microbiology. 19 seats have been allotted for postgraduate program in pharmacology. Similarly, there are 26, 66, 29 seats respectively for MD in physiology, pathology and anatomy respectively.

Postgraduate in Dental Programs


18 seats are in stock for MDS orthodontics aspirants. 10 eligible doctors will get to study periodontology and oral implantology. 15 students will enroll themselves in prosthodontics. Similarly, seven eligible candidates will fulfil their dream of becoming oral and faciomaxillary surgeons. Also, 10 will get to study MDS conservative dentistry and endodontics. Another six eligible candidates will get to graduate in pedodontics and preventive dentistry and three will graduate in oral pathology. One lucky doctor will be able to pursue oral medicine and dentistry and other two will get his alma mater in community dentistry.

Qualifying for postgraduate dental programs.


First and foremost, you must be a BDS or equivalent from institutions recognized by Government of Nepal and be registered in Nepal medical council or other medical councils. One year experience is mandatory for Nepalese candidates.

Postgraduate Seats in Public Health


A total of 123 seats are available for masters in public health. Five seats are available for MPHN (Masters of public health and nutrition). 28 awesome seats are available for MHPE (MPH in health promotion and education) and 22 seats will be available for MPH (Public Health and service management)

Seats in Masters in Nursing programs.

A total of 49 seats are available for women health and development and maternal health. 44 seats are available for adult or medical and surgical nursing. 37 seats are available for pediatric nursing. 22 seats are for psychiatric nursing. 6 and 15 seats in total will be available to eligible candidates in midwifery and community health nursing respectively.
